Oct 4, 2019
On August 26, 2019, Professor Mark Whiteley was presented with the 10th Bauerfeind Phlebology Award at the International Union of Phlebology (UIP) World Congress in Kraków. Bauerfeind has awarded the prize in association with the UIP every two years since 2001. Professor Mark Whiteley is receiving the award, which also comes with EUR 20,000 in prize money, for his research project on the influence of compression therapy on patients with pelvic congestion syndrome – a condition that is still largely unexplored. Pelvic congestion syndrome is a pathological dilatation of the ovarian veins, which can lead to considerable varicose veins in the pelvis. The British vascular surgeon has spent many years researching and teaching about venous diseases. In addition to the Whiteley Clinics in Guildford, London, and Bristol, he also set up a foundation for treating leg wounds. Professor Whiteley previously taught at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London’s best-known teaching hospital, and lectured in surgery at Oxford University.
